IT’S PRIZE TIME!
Festival Dates: August 4-6, 2017
Welcome to the second year of the Film Prize: Memphis, one of the most amazing film experiences you will ever have! Ten short films made right here in Shelby County will compete for the largest cash prize our area has ever seen. And the best part? You’re the judge. The Film Prize: Memphis festival will take place in Memphis, TN on August 4-6, 2017.
What the heck is Film Prize anyway?
We are inviting filmmakers across the country to making a short film between five and fifteen minutes long. Our most strident, unbreakable rule? In order to be eligible to win our $10,000 cash prize, the filmmakers had to make their film in Shelby County, Tennessee. As a result, these filmmakers have been using our city for their film sets, and our creative class to help crew their projects. It’s been pretty awesome!
Over 50 short film projects participated in Film Prize: Memphis in 2016. We expect to grow that number in 2017. Of the participating films, ten will be selected to screen at the festival in August. These ten films are known as the “Top Ten” of Film Prize: Memphis. From the Top Ten, one will be crowned the winner of Film Prize: Memphis 2017 and take home a grand prize of $10,000 cash!
“What about the part where we get to choose the winner?” Patience, Grasshopper…
You Will Rock the Vote
The coolest part of Film Prize: Memphis Festival is the unique way the audience affects the outcome. The voting system for the MFP really is the heart of what makes the Film Prize different from most festivals. And it goes a little like this:
A Festival Passholder MUST SEE ALL 10 SHORT FILMS before they can vote! The Top 10 will be screened once every 2.5 hours throughout the weekend. Once you see all the short films, MAKE SURE YOU GET YOUR PASS PUNCHED by one of our awesome FIlm Prize volunteers. This confirms you saw the films and allows you to vote. You will then go to the voting booth and cast your ballot. It’s that easy!
The Celebrity Judges, a grouping of film industry professionals, will also see the films at the same time as the audience and vote for their favorites in a similar fashion. The Judges’ votes account for only 50% of the total. The audience is the other 50%. This means YOU, the audience member, have a huge say in who wins one of the coolest festivals on the planet. With great power comes great responsibility! Use your influence wisely!
Every vote is a victory for the filmmaker, so don’t be surprised if you’re cajoled and swayed by him/her to vote for them. There’s $10,000 at stake, so you will find yourself with a bunch of fawning filmmaker friends.
And remember, it’s one ticket, one person, one vote. So make it count!
The Where and How
1) Get your tickets online. The tickets you buy will be exchanged for passes when you arrive at the festival. The passes assure you a seat to see the films, a single vote, and access to festival parties.
2) See the films. Come to the festival on August 4-6, 2017. The festival is located at Malco’s Studio on the Square in Central Memphis. The Top Ten films that are a part of the competition will be screened once every 2.5 hours throughout the weekend. See the screening schedule here. Each screening will have a welcome and “How to Film Prize” message, show 5 films, a short break for intermission, and then show the remaining 5 films. Screenings typically run about two hours each and will be screened just 10 times between Friday afternoon and Saturday evening.
3) Get your pass punched. Your pass will be punched AFTER each screening is finished, which will bring you one step closer to being able to cast your vote. You may not leave the theater during a screening or you will be unable to re-enter the theater and your pass will not be punched. There will be an intermission halfway through each screening roughly one hour after the screening begins to allow for restroom breaks and for you to make notes on the films in your festival program! Seating is not reserved (unless you want VIP pampering), so be sure to get in line early to grab a seat.
4) Cast your vote. Once you’ve seen a screening of all ten films, the real magic begins. You, the audience member, will cast your vote for your favorite films and complete your film prize journey. The power to alter the fate of one filmmaker is in your hands. Choose wisely!
